Drinking The Social Anxiety Away With Alcohol... Does It Even Work?

Alcohol & Social Anxiety: Your Best Friend or Your Frenemy?

We’ve all been there—you want to be social, have fun, and connect with people, but your social anxiety is doing everything in its power to hold you back. Then enters alcohol, promising to be your new best friend, taking the edge off and making socializing easier. But sometimes, alcohol isn’t the friend you think it is. In fact, it can be more like a frenemy—seemingly helping you in the moment but making things worse in the long run.

Does Alcohol Really Help Social Anxiety?

If you experience social anxiety, your goal in social situations is probably to decrease your inhibitions—something alcohol is known to do quite well. But here’s the catch: alcohol doesn’t come with a fine-tuned dial to adjust just how much inhibition gets lowered. Instead, it can throw that dial all the way to the extreme, leaving you vulnerable to missteps you wouldn’t normally make.

Alcohol can make you feel funnier, more charismatic, and charming, but does that mean you actually are? People with social anxiety often underestimate their ability to connect with others. They feel awkward and assume others see them the same way—even when that’s far from the truth. Alcohol can create the opposite illusion: you feel like you're the life of the party, but in reality, you might be misjudging the situation.

The Anxiety-Alcohol Cycle: Why It Backfires

For those struggling with social anxiety, alcohol can become a quick fix. The need to feel at ease pushes people to drink before a social event even starts or to drink too quickly to get that anxious wall down. But when that happens, the effect can hit like a brick—suddenly, that wall isn’t just lowered; it’s obliterated. And while it might feel like a relief at the moment, that lack of inhibition can lead to uncomfortable situations and regret.

Then comes the dreaded rebound effect. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant, which is why it initially makes you feel relaxed. But as your body processes it, your brain fights back, triggering a flood of anxious energy once the alcohol wears off. This can leave you feeling even more anxious than before, and worse—obsessing over everything you said or did the night before.

The morning-after spiral might look like this:

  • Feeling uneasy and unsettled.

  • Wondering, Did I say something embarrassing?

  • Scrolling through texts or social media for clues about your behavior.

  • Worrying that your social success “didn’t count” because it was fueled by alcohol.

This cycle can quickly become a trap—drinking to ease anxiety, feeling worse later, and then drinking again to escape that discomfort. Over time, this pattern can reinforce the belief that you need alcohol to socialize, which isn’t true.

Breaking Free: Finding Healthier Ways to Manage Social Anxiety

If you rely on alcohol to handle social anxiety, it’s important to step back and ask yourself: Is this really helping me in the long run? The good news? There are better, healthier ways to ease social anxiety without alcohol, like:

  • Gradual exposure – Start small with social interactions that feel manageable and build from there.

  • Mindfulness techniques – Breathing exercises and grounding strategies can help calm your nerves.

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) – Working with a therapist can help reframe anxious thoughts and build confidence.

  • Support networks – Surrounding yourself with understanding friends and engaging in sober social activities can be empowering.

If you or someone you know is caught in this cycle, there are resources to help. For more insights and practical tips on overcoming social anxiety, check out my YouTube channel, Put The Shovel Down, where I dive deeper into these topics.

Social anxiety is tough, and alcohol might seem like an easy fix. But in reality, it often makes things worse. By understanding the impact of alcohol on social anxiety and learning healthier coping strategies, you can build genuine confidence in social situations—without relying on a drink to get you there.
