They Admit There's a Problem, But Nothing Changes

They Admit They Have an Addiction Problem. So Why Won’t They Change?

They finally say it.

“I know I’m drinking too much.”

“I know my drug use is getting out of control.”

“I know I’ve lied and broken your trust.”

And you think, finally. They see it. Maybe now something will change.

But then... nothing happens.

They don’t make the appointment. They don’t go to treatment. They don’t talk to their doctor. Maybe they promise they’re going to handle it themselves or make a few changes for a couple of days, but pretty soon you’re right back where you started.

If they KNOW they have an addiction problem, why won’t they do something about it?

That’s one of the most frustrating parts of loving someone struggling with addiction, but there’s something important families need to understand:

Knowing there’s a problem and wanting to change the problem are not the same thing.
